Moonves: CBS All Access And Star Trek: Discovery Doing Very Well

During the CBS Corporation Fourth Quarter 2017 Earnings Release Teleconference, Leslie Moonves, Chairman and CEO, spoke about the success of CBS All Access streaming and Star Trek: Discovery.
“In a very short period of time, CBS All Access and Showtime OTT are now at nearly five million subs combined,” he said. “That’s far beyond where we expected to be at this point and it gives us great confidence that we will more than exceed our goal of eight million subs combined by 2020.
“These services give us our highest subscriber rates and a direct relationship with our consumers as we collect increasingly valuable data about our audience. Delivering these services over the top also allows us to attract the next generation of viewers with an average age that’s approximately twenty years younger than those who watch broadcast and cable television. This is the case with our entertainment content on CBS All Access and it’s the case with our news content at CBSN, our direct-to-consumer digital news network with nearly eighty percent of the audience is between the ages of eighteen and forty-nine and the average age is thirty-eight.”
CBS All Access had a very successful year, said Moonves. “2017 was a breakout year for CBS All Access,” he said. “We doubled our subs year over year and we kicked off our best month ever in January. We are driving this growth first and foremost with our content. This includes our big events like the NFL and the Grammys, more than ten thousand episodes of current and library programming, and our original series programming, lead by Star Trek: Discovery, which was obviously a runaway success.”
This was even though the show “was as expensive a production as we have ever done,” said Moonves. “We were just launching All Access. We got a huge amount of money from Netflix for the international rights and it made it very viable for All Access and we continue to do that.”
