Takei Put To The Test
1 min readIn Philadelphia for an event at Star Trek: The Exhibition, George Takei took time out for an appearance on Good Day Philadelphia, where his knowledge of Star Trek sound effects were soon put to the test.
When asked if he knew back when he landed the role of Sulu how life-changing the role would be, Takei explained the importance of getting the role, but he couldn’t resist teasing his hosts. “I desperately wanted to be cast because I saw that it was an amazing and original show and it was a breakthrough role for an Asian-American actor,” he said. “But in addition to that, because I’m a visionary, I said to myself, if I get cast in this role, in the year 2009, I will be in Philadelphia talking to you. Yes, I knew!”
Even though it has been years since the series ended, Takei claimed that he would remember all of the sound effects and what they meant if put to the test. “Absolutely,” he said confidently. “I know what warp one sounds like. I know what warp eight sounds like. And I know what impulse power sounds like.”
A CD with Star Trek sound effects was quickly produced and three different sounds were played. Takei had no problem with “red alert,” and the sound of the ship going into warp, but the sound of phasers firing threw him. “That’s the door opening,” he said.
