Shatner Backs Bid To Protect Wild Salmon
1 min readWilliam Shatner support a British Columbia bill to protect wild salmon on British Columbia’s west coast.
Shatner will call in from Los Angeles tomorrow to a press conference organized by the New Democratic Party (NDP) to voice his support for the bill.
The proposed bill would require the Pacific salmon-farming industry to move its operations from coastal waters to closed containment. This move is meant to keep sea lice, who are blamed for a decline in the salmon population, from spreading.
NDP’s Fin Donnelly introduced the bill, and convinced Shatner to speak in its behalf. “I phoned him and told him about this bill that I have got to move to closed containment to protect wild salmon on the west coast and he was happy to help,” said Donnelly.
Shatner once mentioned salmons rights in a tweet, and an episode of Boston Legal in which he appeared (Finding Nimmo) addressed the problem of sea lice and salmon population decline. Shatner began working with some of the British Columbia activists after this episode and wrote Prime Minister Stephen Harper regarding the salmon farms.
“He’s taken a stand on it,” said Donnelly, ” and he’s willing to work with us on it.”
