Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek online reference, now has 20,000 articles in its database.
Wikia, Inc., which develops and hosts community-based wikis in which users create and edit entries, announced at PRWeb that Memory Alpha had reached the milestone. The site is one of over 1500 at Wikia, which has over 30,000 registered users.
Other sci-fi and fantasy-themed wikis at Wikia are focused on Star Wars, Stargate and Lord of the Rings. The site was launched in 2004 based on the Wikipedia model, an open-source encyclopedia built by its users.
Sierra Lovelace of Bite Communications wrote to The Trek Nation to say that Memory Alpha is looking for additional contributors. "With the '40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection' auction hosted by Christie's of New York starting tomorrow, please be sure to visit the Memory Alpha Wiki today to retrieve critical information to help guide you through the auction," she added.
Memory Alpha, which identifies itself as "a collaborative project to create the most definitive, accurate, and accessible encyclopedia and reference for everything related to Star Trek", has trivia and weekly articles on its front page and links to articles needing attention and detail.
