In a new video, fans are introduced to a younger Sarek and see some of the roots of potential conflict between the Vulcan and his human ward.
Sarek has “recognized that [Burnham] no longer fits in,” said Alex Kurtzman, “in Vulcan in the way that Vulcan is progressing.”
“[Sarek’s] a key character,” said James Frain. “We find out a lot about who Spock is because of him, but now we’re going back in time and finding out well who was he as a younger man.
“He’s very proud of [Burnham], but he doesn’t always communicate that to her. She needs his approval.”
