LeVar Burton Park Dedicated Today

1 min read

Meadowview‘s Richfield Park was renamed in honor of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s LeVar Burton today. The actor was in attendance for the ceremony which took place in Sacramento.

Burton grew up in Sacramento, attending two schools in the Meadowview area of the city; St. Anne’s and Charles Borromeo.

Before the ceremony, Burton visited a Sacramento school, John Still Middle School, to encourage the students. “My message to the kids was ‘If I can do it, so can you’ said Burton.

It was a hot day in Sacramento, reaching ninety degrees before noon. “This is very Sacramento,” said Burton, referring to the heat.

Those attending the renaming ceremony enjoyed music, food trucks and other activities. The mayor of Sacramento told those in attendance that the city was picking up the costs of the food trucks, so lunch was on him.

According to CBS 13‘s Dan Mitchinson via his Twitter account, Burton “[choked] up during [the] speech saying he never expected this.”

“This is the neighborhood where I grew up,” said Burton. “[I grew up] just down the street and around the corner.”
