CBS-Viacom Merger Expected Soon

1 min read

We’ve heard rumors for a while about a CBS-Viacom merger and now comes word, via The Hollywood Reporter, that this merger could be announced as early as August 8.

Streaming is “driving the need for CBS and Viacom to merge: CBS needs more content to feed All Access and its Showtime direct-to-consumer products” in order to compete with other streaming services such as Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix, as well as any new services that arrive.

“Each company would offset the weaknesses of the other, said S&P Global analyst Naveen Sarma. “Viacom lacks a must-have network, and CBS would resolve that. Assets are complementary, and there is very little overlap.”

As far as Star Trek goes, this means that televised/streaming Star Trek and Star Trek movies will finally be reunited under the same umbrella.
