The Review:
In addition to getting to rewatch Season Two of Star Trek: Discovery, there are four audio commentaries; one for New Eden (Anson Mount and Jonathan Frakes), one for Through the Valley of Shadows (Mount and Ethan Peck), one for Such Sweet Sorrow (Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Michelle Paradise, and Alex Kurtzman), and one for Brother (Sonequa Martin-Green and Kurtzman). The one with Mount and Peck is the most fun to watch.
There are nine featurettes and a very welcome gag reel, as well as a special Easter Egg featurette.
Designing Discovery: Season Two (17:47) – Here, learn about designing Section 31’s bridge, Kamimar housing, L’Rell’s Klingon home, a shuttle and more. Those taking part in this featurette include: Jody Clement, Tamera Deverell, Marc Kuitenbrouwer, Matt Middleton and Franco Tata.
Prop Me Up: Season Two (8:55) is, as one would think, about props. This featurette features Mario Moreira who shows fans a new Section 31 phaser (and explains why it has a retracting barrel) as well as a Kelpien knife and L’Rells knife.
Dress for Success: Season Two (16:00) – See the development and the fitting of costumes created by Gersha Phillips and her team. Some of the costumes included were made for L’Rell, Georgiou, Sarek, Pike, and Number One. The various stages are shown, from muslin to final costume, including some of the fittings. Some of the actors are shown being fitted or reacting to their costumes.
Creature Comforts: Season Two (15:15) shows how humans are transformed into aliens via hair, ears, heads and more. Creature Comforts includes Glenn Hetrick, James MacKinnon, and Neville Page. Some of the aliens shown include Airiam, Linus the Saurian, Saru and his sister Siranna, and the Talosians.
Creating Space (10:11) includes Ante Dekovic and Jason Zimmerman who show how various effects are created. Martin-Green speaks about the Red Angel suit that she dons at season’s end and how she mentally prepares for her scenes when she must use her imagination to pretend that things are really there so that she can react to/use them properly.
Putting It Together (43:00) shows how the Season Two finale was created. Alex Kurtzman, Olatunde Osunsanmi, and Michelle Paradise are in this featurette.
Star Trek: Discovery: The Voyage of Season Two (55:42) features many of those involved in this season, including producers, directors, writers, and actors. The topic of this featurette is the making of the second season – the characters and the episodes.
Enter the Enterprise (10:32) is about creating the U.S.S. Enterprise sets from scratch. Marc Kuitenbrouwer and Tamara Deverell show how the sets were constructed.
The Red Angel (13:09) is about creating the Red Angel suit worn by Burnham and her mother. This featurette includes Alex Kurtzman, Mario Moreira, and Gersha Phillips.
A Gag Reel (7:08) is a welcome addition to this season’s DVD/Blu-ray sets. See your favorite actors flub up their lines and crack up.
Chat in the Makeup Trailer is an Easter Egg bonus featurette (6:37) includes James MacKinnon and Mary Chieffo in the makeup trailer where they talk about makeup.
Deleted scenes:
There are deleted scenes for New Eden, Point of Light, Light of Shadows, Project Daedalus, The Red Angel, Through the Valley of Shadows, Such Sweet Sorrow 1 and Such Sweet Sorrow 2; including almost twenty minutes of extra scenes.
Particularly noteworthy is the Tyler/L’Rell conversation in Though the Valley of Shadows, as well as a funny scene in the turbolift with Burnham, Spock and Tyler in the same episode. Another good deleted scene is a Burnham and Spock conversation on the bridge in Such Sweet Sorrow.
The Verdict:
Rewatching Star Trek: Discovery: Season Two will get one ready to watch Season Three when it airs in January. As a fan, the extras and commentaries are well worth the price of the set.
The only flaw with the set was the packaging. When opening the case to take out the discs, one of the two plastic disc holders fell out of the case. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s broken or I can snap it back in.
