Another Famous Scot Joins Starfleet
2 min readWhile Scotty may be the most famous Scotsman in Starfleet, another well-known Scotsman has joined another Starfleet – Starfleet, the International Fan Association.
Earlier this fall, The Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, became a full-fledged member of the fan association after an invitation was extended to him which was accepted by the First Minister.
Word had got back to Starfleet that the Right Honourable Mr. Salmond was a “declared Star Trek fanatic.” Starfleet then decided that it was only logical to extend an invitation to the First Minister. “Starfleet is the oldest and largest continuously active Star Trek fan club in the world,” said Rear Admiral Jonathan Lane, Starfleet’s Chief of Communications, “And we pride ourselves on having members across the globe. It seemed only fitting to offer Mr. Salmond not just an honorary membership but a fully active membership in our organization.”
Mr. Salmond accepted the membership with a spokesperson for the First Minister responding. “Mr. Salmond is delighted to boldly accept what no First Minister has accepted before. As a devotee of Star Trek since its earliest episodes, and a fan of Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Uhura in particular from the original series, he is happy to add his name to the ranks of Starfleet members worldwide.”
Like all Starfleet members, Salmond will receive his membership ID card and certificate, according to Starfleet’s press release. Salmond will also receive “six issues of Starfleet’s bi-monthly Communiqué publication mailed to him in Scotland. In addition, Salmond will be eligible to “vote in any and all upcoming Starfleet elections while he is a member, and access to Starfleet’s online chat lists.” Salmond will also be able to “avail himself of all of Starfleet’s resources; including over a thousand online correspondence courses within Starfleet Academy and the extensive data libraries of the Department of Technical Services, which has information on nearly every starship ever designed or constructed.”
Salmond isn’t the first celebrity or politician to be revealed as a Star Trek fan. Other Trek fans, past and present, include: Eddie Murphy, Tom Hanks, Ben Stiller, King Abdullah II of Jordan (who even appeared in a Star Trek: Voyager episode), Al Gore, Kelsey Grammer, Seth MacFarlane, Colin Powell, Richard Branson, and Frank Sinatra, who was a fan of The Next Generation.
