TAS On Blu-Ray?

1 min read

According to Robert Meyer Burnett, who was one of the persons responsible for the new bonus features on last year’s Blu-ray release of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Trek fans can look forward to a Blu-ray release of The Animated Series.

The Animated Series was originally released on DVD in 2006.

“There are plans afoot to bring The Animated Series to Blu-ray,” said Burnett, in an interview with Trekcore.

“I love The Animated Series,” said Burnett, “because to me – despite the very limited animation and some of the lethargy on display from some of the voice acting, and James Doohan doing every other alien voice – there are some great episodes of The Animated Series. Episodes that I really like written by original series writers, whether it’s Yesteryear being case in point; Albatross and Bem, How Sharper than a Serpent’s Tooth and The Counter-Clock Incident and Jihad – there are a lot of really interesting stories there that I think are really legitimate.”

Burnett is already in the process of brainstorming about the project. “I have an idea that would be crazy to pull off, but if we could, it would be really interesting,” he said.

  1. Did you think that the artists carefully drew the images to be exactly the size that they are on your TV screen?

    No?

Then you must understand that somewhere, there’s probably a bigger, better version of the cartoon you saw, right? And if someone were to go back to the masters and create a new high-definition transfer, then it’d be so much bigger and better that you’d want a Blu-ray disc to hold all that data.

  2. Wow…what a rambler.

The way we scrutinize things now, it’s insane”…Such as the way you whined for how many minutes because the Enterprise was built on Earth? LMAO

  3. I’m not sure, either, but I’ve always thought it would be cool to redo the series in CGI. Keep the soundtrack, lose the low-budget animation. That could be cool on Blu-Ray. (We could call it the “ReAnimated Series”

  4. This is probably a very late comment but.. to understand just how much better a cartoon can look than an old standard definition release one just need look at the original cels used in its production. They tend to look a lot sharper and cleaner than even 1080p and the colors pop a lot more. No matter which way one sees it on screen it can’t match that. But HD does bring it closer…

Quite a few animated productions even have background that where made using painterly details very much like traditional media (painting) and HD brings out those details a lot better than SD does. So what you get with HD and “cartoons” is brighter, sharper colors, cleaner lines and more painterly details and possibly more. To some those aren’t a big deal but are a big plus to others.
