American Cinematographer is published by the American Society of Cinematographers, a “non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the art of filmmaking.”
In Boldly Captured, which is twelve pages in length, J.J. Abrams, Cinematographer Dan Mindel and others explain the decisions made when it came to shooting the movie. One of the decisions was to shoot in 2-D and convert to 3-D afterwards. “The studio wanted a 3-D movie, and [shooting film] became an easier decision once we realized we could deliver that with a quality conversion,” said Abrams.
“My goal,” explained Abrams, ” was to make as good as a film as I could in 2-D and let it be converted to 3-D for those who wanted the ‘hot sauce.’ I think we achieved that.”
