Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar, a “History Channel-style documentary,” will screen this Saturday at the San Diego Comic-Con.
In Prelude to Axanar, Commander Kharn and Captain Garth of Izar will look back at the final battle between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.
The main film, Star Trek: Axanar, will be a ninety-minute feature film that is set to debut in 2016.
In Star Trek: Axanar, the final battle between the Federation and the Klingon Empire is set approximately twenty years before James T. Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise.
“We’re in a time period where there isn’t any Star Trek on TV, and people are looking for opportunities,” said Producer/Creator Alec Peters, who also plays Garth of Izar in the movie. “For a lot of Star Trek fans, the J.J. Abrams films are not Star Trek.”
The Kickstarter project for Axanar met its original funding goal, and raised more than $100,000. The producers hope to raise another $250,000.
Set in the familiar Star Trek universe, Prelude to Axanar touches upon the difficulties of “mental illness, the scars or war, and the impossibility, even centuries in the future, of creating a perfect society.”
For those attending San Diego Comic-Con, the Prelude to Axanar screening will take place at the United Artists Horton Plaza 8 Movie Theater, a short distance from the San Diego Convention Center. The event begins with red carpet appearances at 8 PM, followed by the screening at 9 PM, and a ninety-minute Q&A afterwards with the producer, director, and several actors.

It does look interesting. It says something about the state of Trek when the fan projects are more interesting than the “official” works. Maybe they need to support these – just think of how many fan projects could be done off of just he catering budget of a JJ film!

Paramount is just going to roll over and allow these people to raise $250,000 on Kickstarter using the “Star Trek” name and content?! I find this difficult to believe. The rule is that it’s okay to make a “Star Trek” fan film like this as long as there is no money being made from the production. But $250,000 is a lot of money, and there is NO ACCOUNTABILITY to where all that money is going. There is no way to know how much money is going into the production or disappearing into somebody’s pockets. The fact is that without the “Star Trek” name and content, these people would not be raising a dime on Kickstarter. Paramount needs to take a detailed look into this “fan production.”

It’s not the only such fan production asking for money from Kickstarter. I say if the studio is ok with it, let it be.
Could be good. I so badly want a quality fan film. Something that “feels” like Star Trek. Clearly, we are getting closer. My main thing is I wish they had focused on the Earth-Romulan war instead!

Axanar reached their goal and it’s going to be a great success. These are real professionals putting this together. Also Tony Todd and Gary Graham are in the production. Todd was in DS9 and we know Gary was in ENT. Plus Richard Hatch from BSG is going to be in it. Watch the video Prelude to Axanar on their website. It is FANTASTIC!
