Shatner-Takei Feud Is On Again

1 min read

William Shatner launched another broadside in the long term Shatner-Takei feud.

The actor is currently in Australia touring and appearing in his one-man show Shatner’s World…We Just Live In It.

“He is a very disturbed individual, the truth of the matter is,” said Shatner.

“I don’t know him. I haven’t seen him in twenty-five years. I don’t know what he is up to. It is not a question that has any meaning to me. It is like asking about George Foreman or something.”

The feud dates back at least to the 1990s when George Takei‘s autobiography To The Stars: The Autobiography of George Takei was published, but fans who attended conventions well before then were aware of the animosity between the two.

Shatner’s World…We Just Live In It is currently playing in Brisbane and will head next to Sydney.

  1. Takei obviously hates that Shatner is the star of Trek. He should get over it and appreciate his own part in the mythos.

  2. Well done, Mr Shatner. And now good ole George can think of a scathing reply, fabricating something about Shatner being against gay Asians … (Gaysians, now that’s a word that really sounds good) … or whatever his pitiful mind can come up with.

  3. Imagine you’re 80 years, and a co-worker from a job you had 50 years ago is still holding a grudge and bad-mouthing you. It would be very weird and yes, you might conclude he’s disturbed.nnOf course, Harlan Ellison is also still holding a grudge. And we all know he’s not disturbed. 😉

  4. I think these partners in crime, Shatner Takei, have conspired to to play this performance art when either needs publicity for their latest project. Follow the money.

  5. Both William Shatner and George Takei are both pretty annoying to becoming the feud that bring them against each other constantly in the news. They are both people of such age who continue to draw everyone can wonder childish or not spoiled bored toddlers are those that really nothing else to do than to be in one another will chop which the Star Trek Fan constantly harassed with this kind bullshit messages that really go nowhere about .

  6. I want to agree that we may have a case where Takei might have thought he was a better actor and couldn’t accept Shatner as the star–given the time, the late 80s/90s, it makes sense: the end of hope that one will have a breakout career as one reaches ones 50s (neglecting the fact that Takei did breakout, just not as big as he may have thought warranted), coupled with the clear decline in Shatner’s abilities in the mid-80s and the disaster that was Star Trek V: the dislike between Doohan and Shatner is apparent in the opening of “Generations”. nnnWhat always needs to be acknowledged is that without William Shatner I find it hard to believe that Star Trek would have endured–it was the combination of ability and a certain physical look (manly, but not central casting “pretty boy” or “Randolph Scott” manly) that made the show what it was.** Yes, Nimoy mattered, but Nimoy with Geoffrey Hunter makes the show one of those neat things you would have seen at the film room of conventions and not many people would know about today (think “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”, but with better scripts). Same thing if it had been, say, Robert Conrad (“The Wild Wild West” is no longer a cultural totem), or if Chris Pine had time warped to a 1966 casting call. Or Matt Damon, or Ben Affleck. nnnShatner has an ego, and in the 80s it apparently became a monster. I think he indulged in his inner jerk. What needs to be acknowledged is that the guy really was the perfect Kirk, and a good part of that was that when Shatner was handed a good script, he could act to 100% of the script’s potential, and add more. In his prime, he was just a damn good actor, period, coupled with a look that was somewhat unique (these things matter in casting). Is he a great Shakespearean-type actor, an Olivier? Of course not. But he was a great Kirk. nnnThere is no Star Trek as we know the phenomena without Bill Shatner, and that is all there is to it.

  7. Takei *just* posted up something kind of positive about Shatner on his Facebook page, too. But then, last time that Takei attacked Shatner was soon after Shatner stood up for him when Takei was under fire for insulting Clarence Thomas.nnI’m convinced this is all an act because every time one does something nice, the other attacks. It’s like clockwork.

  8. It sounds to me like Shatner was asked a question about it. I wouldn’t necessarily say he was trying to egg the feud on again though the high road would have been for him to not comment on it. Oh well. nnHaving said all of that, I agree with what Shatner said about Takei. He’s definitely a disturbed individual that seems to be trying REALLY hard to stay relevant these days. Unfortunately the only thing he seems to have left is to get media attention by tearing other people down. It’s sad really.

  9. What happens was decades ago, I’d like to see the two of them put the past in the past and move on. George may not be in the icon status as William Shatner, but he has his fans and has done great work since Star Trek and William Shatner has proven that he’s a great actor in shows like Boston Legal. Leave the past in the past.

  10. Yes, this seems to be Shatner’s answer to an interviewer’s question about his relationship with Takei and the reason for the “feud”, especially as he says, “I donu2019t know him. I havenu2019t seen him in twenty-five years. I donu2019t know what he is up to. It is not a question that has any meaning to me.” The source publication didn’t make this clear, because why let the truth get in the way of a story?

  11. That does seem to be George’s answer to anyone that criticizes him: you must be anti-gay. In the case of Shatner, he follows it up normally with something like Bill is full of himself, or he isn’t a very good actor or some other rubbish. My gosh it’s annoying!

  12. It’s funny… Shatner has used this exact same quote two or three times already in North America. I’m starting to agree that one or both of them is keeping this thing going. I think we should all just let it die.

  13. Actually Takei saw Shatner at Shatner’s Comedy Central Roast 10 years ago and have talked (via phone) on Howard Stern as recently as three or four years ago.nnSomehow I wonder if this isn’t some fake feud, like Andy Kauffman/Jerry Lawler.
