Pegg: Don’t Worry – It’ll Be Good
1 min readFor fans that were worried about Star Trek Beyond after seeing the teaser, Simon Pegg says not to worry.
Pegg explained that of course the trailer would be filled with action, to entice people to go and see the film. “It was very action-packed – yeah, it was surprising,” he said. “I find [the trailer] to be the marketing people saying ‘Everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun!'”
But there will be good stuff in the film for Trek fans. “There’s a lot more to [the movie] than that,” said Pegg. “I didn’t love [the trailer] because I know there’s a lot more to the film. There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I call ‘Star Trek stuff.’
“But, you know, [Paramount has to] bring a big audience in; they’ve got to bang the drum. To the Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there and be patient.”
I’m not really sure I trust Simon Pegg given his comedic turn at portraying Scotty. But I will heed his advice anyway and wait to actually see the film before condemning it. Or lauding it for that matter!

There’s a much longer version of this on The Nerdist site, where Pegg says a lot of really good things and proves that he gets it. Check out their article.
Pegg’s not defending the trailer. He actually said he “didn’t love it”.nTrailers are usually outsourced to specialist companies to make. In an interview with slashfilm, Lin actually expressed surprise and disappointment at the use of the motorcycle in the trailer.
I am definitely encouraged. He said all the right things, and seems to feel the trailer misrepresented the film. His embarrassed plea for patience is really heartening. I might have expected a no-apologies sound bite about what a thrill ride it will be, and that would be depressing. I will be patient! Sort of…
Strikes me as the Paramount machine going in to defensive overdrive. The suits have seen the almost universal condemnation of the film based on the trailer, and have instructed Pine and Lin to tell the world the trailer isn’t representative of the movie. So, on that basis, Paramount has shown it has no idea what it’s doing. Quite how the suits will respond to Pegg and Lin insinuating that their employer doesn’t have a clue, is yet to be seen, but Paramount is likely so desperate, it will even willingly make itself look incompetent in order to try to save the film.nnnnIf I were Paramount, I’d withdraw the teaser, and get a new trailer made up very very quickly before the shit dries hard on Beyond.
If it’s half as good as the Force Awakens, Star Trek has a good future.
I’m not as upset at Simon playing Scotty as I thought I would be, primarily because he brings out his comedic side. Look at Scotty in “the trouble with tribbles”, a fine example of Scotty’s comedic side.
If you actually have to say that about a movie… it’s not gonna be good.
Pegg permanently plays Scotty as a comedy character. That’s my huge problem with him. The portrayal is a huge turnoff. In TOS and the TOS movies, apart from a few notable exceptions, Doohan was always serious and hard as nails, playing up to the tough Scotsman stereotype. I can’t for one moment imagine Pegg’s Scott crying over the body of his dead nephew.
This from the guy who a few years ago told most of us to “F-Off.” Ya, I’m really going to care what he says.
