Nichols Has Moderate Dementia
1 min readAccording to documents filed in Nichelle Nichols‘ conservatorship, her doctor, Meena Makhijani said that Nichols had moderate progressive dementia.
Nichols has been a patient of Makhijani for several years.
Back in May, Nichol’s son Kyle Johnson filed legal documents to appoint conservators to guard her finances and to make health decisions for the actress.
Her dementia was “impacting her executive function,” said Johnson, and it made her “susceptible to undue influence.”
Johnson filed to appoint the conservatives because he felt his mother had been and would be taken advantage of. Her manager, Gilbert Bell, had “recently deeded one of two properties Nichols owns to himself.” Once the original petition was filed, Bell cancelled the transfer of that property.
That petition was granted in May, and Nichols consented to the appointment.
Makhijani provided details of the progression of the dementia, saying that Nichols had “major impairment of her short-term memory” and “moderate impairment of understanding abstract concepts, sense of time, place, and immediate recall.”
Nichols does, however, still has “long term memory, orientation of her body, comprehension, verbal communication, concentration, recognition of familiar people, as well as ability to reason logically and plan actions.”
