Picard’s Life Radically Altered In New Series

Alex Kurtzman has revealed a little more about the new Picard show to The Hollywood Reporter. Plus: Getting Stewart onboard for the new show.
According to Kurtzman, “Picard’s life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire,” which was destroyed in Star Trek (2009). The series is expected to be set twenty years after Star Trek: Nemesis, so that would be around a dozen years after the loss of Romulus.
When asked if some of Picard’s old crew on the Enterprise-D could return in cameos, in a statement sure to please The Next Generation fans, Kurtzman said, “Anything could happen.”

Kurtzman also shared how they got Sir Patrick Stewart to say yes to the new series. First, Stewart’s agent was called and asked for a meeting. “To our amazement and delight, the agent called back and said he was curious to know what we had in mind,” said Kurtzman.
After a pitch by Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and Kirsten Beyer, Stewart asked for a three-page document with their ideas for the series. Instead of three pages however, the trio, plus newly added Michael Chabon, delivered much more than that.
“It turned into a thirty-four-page document — with no way to shorten it,” said Kurtzman. “We were going on all in and he was going to read it or not read it, love it or hate it. It was our best attempt at trying to get him to say yes.”
The next meeting with Stewart was a positive one for the team. “He walked into the room and he had a huge smile on his face and said, ‘This is wonderful,'” said Kurtzman. “What he understood at that point … was that he was with people who desperately wanted to collaborate with him, that we weren’t trying to exploit him. He knew if he was going to go back to Picard, it needed to be for the greatest reason ever.”
