Shatner Book: Live Long And…What I Learned Along The Way

2 min read

William Shatner has a new book out and in it, he describes two of the more painful times in his life.

Live Long And…What I Learned Along The Way includes Shatner’s thoughts the loss of his wife Nerine Kidd, who drowned in their swimming pool in 1999, and his regrets over the loss of Leonard Nimoy‘s friendship.

Shatner explained what happened on the day his wife died. “I found her in our pool and lifted her out of the water,” he said. “The emergency responders rushed to the house, but there was nothing that could be done. I saw her body lying there in the moonlight.

“My grief was overwhelming. This was the type of pain that makes you think either I’m simply going to die or I’m going to kill myself. The drowning death of my wife Nerine haunts me.”

Another bad memory for Shatner was the loss of Leonard Nimoy‘s friendship. The two were never reconciled and the opportunity was lost with the death of Nimoy in 2015. Shatner wrote that the actor stopped talking to him and that he is not quite sure why.

But in a Hollywood Reporter interview in 2016, Shatner believed that it might have been due to a movie that Shatner was making. Nimoy didn’t want to appear in it but Shatner filmed him without permission anyhow.

“I thought [he] was joking at first and treated it as a joke because he sometimes would pretend and say, ‘No, I’m not going to do that’ and then say, ‘yes,’ so that’s what I thought he did,” said Shatner. “But that time he really meant no. I just don’t know, and it is sad and it is permanent. I don’t know why he stopped talking to me.”

Shatner admitted in Live Long And…What I Learned Along The Way that the real reason that he didn’t attend Nimoy’s funeral wasn’t just a charity obligation, but the fact that he felt unwelcome.

To this day, in spite of his comments in 2016, he’s still not sure what really caused the rift. “Until the day I die, I will still wonder what caused that rift,” he said. “After all the years we had spent together, after the bond we had forged, what could I have done that was so irreparable that he couldn’t even talk to me about it?”
