2 min read

Two original series Blu-ray and DVD releases should be of interest to Star Trek fans.

The releases include Star Trek: The Original Series: Origin, and a repackaging of the DVD release of Star Trek: The Original Series Remastered Seasons 1-3.

Arriving in stores on September 10, Star Trek: The Original Series: Origins (Blu-ray) will take fans to where the Star Trek franchise began – showcasing the “origins episodes of the most significant characters from Star Trek: The Original Series. Introduced by Rod Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Walter Koenig and Ricardo Montalban, this value-priced release is an ideal collection for both brand new and lifelong fans of the timeless series.”

Episodes included in Star Trek: The Original Series: Origins include:

  • The Cage – This original pilot episode of the epic series introduces fans to the iconic characters Captain Pike and Spock.
  • Where No Man Has Gone Before – The second pilot episode in which Captain James T. Kirk is first seen at the helm of the Enterprise.
  • Space Seed – Witness the debut of the unforgettable super villain, Khan.
  • Errand of Mercy – This thrilling episode introduces the legendary alien race, the Klingons.
  • The Trouble with Tribbles – This fan-favorite episode includes the arrival of the cute, but catastrophic, creatures.

Specifications for Star Trek: The Original Series: Origins include English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, English SDH, French, German and Japanese subtitles.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Origins has a run time of almost four-and-a-half hours, and will sell for a SRP of $26.99. Amazon is currently showing a price of $16.99. To pre-order Star Trek: The Original Series: Origins, head to the link located here.

The second Star Trek DVD release will happen August 13, exclusively at Best Buy stores in the US and Canada. In this release, Star Trek: The Original Series Remastered Seasons 1-3 will “receive a new look.”

“A must-own for both brand new and lifelong Star Trek fans, each season features all-new packing, including a multi-disc amaray within the slipcase, and are housed in an O-sleeve with a textured finish. Every season showcases a Starfleet division uniform with its respective color scheme, as well as one gadget from Star Trek: The Original Series.”

The artwork for each season is as follows:

  • Season One, represented by the shimmering gold color, represents the command division and tricorder tool.
  • Season Two, repackaged in a bright blue shade, symbolizes the sciences division and communicator gadget.
  • Season Three returns refurbished in a vibrant red hew representing the operations and phaser device.

The older packaging for this set will still be available at other retailers, but only for a limited time.

  1. Those DVD cases look cool! Saddly, in the case of Star Trek, I have picked up the Blu-rays and I just don’t feel like buying TOS ever again! However for those who still might want to own the show on DVD, this may just be the best packaging yet!

  2. Hmm. The “Origins” may be a good intro for the curious neophytes intrigued by JJTrek. I just hope they are not disappointed that there are no lens flares, Beastie Boys tracks, or quick cuts every 2 seconds or less.

  3. Another clear sign of CBS/Paramount milking the franchise for what it is worth. More profit and less quality, all in the name of materialism.

Seriously, there is no reason to release versions like this.

Conservatively speaking, if a fan wants to watch the original episodes, they need not look any furthur than the sets containing the first three seasons and the set containing the animated series(the 4th season that fans got four years after the series was cancelled). Let alone the sets containing the first six films.

Sometimes capitalism can be most illogical. If not a useless experiment.

  4. Is there anything new as far as the seasons 1, 2, and 3 box sets go or are these just repackages?
