Discovery Negotiations, Denials and Confirmations

2 min read

At last weekend’s New York Comic Con, Alex Kurtzman spoke about the possibility of the show being renewed for a second season. Plus – original series characters talk and confirmation of a rumor. (Spoilers below)

Kurtzman confirmed that discussions for a second season were in progress. “Conversations are going very well,” he said. “We’re more than hopeful that they’ll be ordering a second season very soon.”

The show is a hit for CBS, whose subscriptions have doubled since the show premiered. Some people aren’t happy though about it being on a pay streaming service. “I totally get why people are upset,” said Producer Heather Kadin. “I grew up middle class and my parents are confused that they have to pay to watch our show. But there is something amazing about being able to launch a new network and become a place that people may find stories they wouldn’t be able to find on traditional network.”

During a press conference, Producer Akiva Goldsman shot down the idea that any of the original series characters (minus Sarek and Amanda) would be mentioned or included on the show. But one rumor was confirmed as true by Kurtzman. “Well, it sort of leaked (via Jonathan Frakes) that we are going to be doing some episodes about the mirror universe,” he said. “And yes, we’re going to be paying homage to the original.”

Note that while Frakes had mentioned a single MU episode, Kurtzman mentioned multiple episodes.
